Dolwyddelan Castle was constructed by Llywelyn Fawr (Llywelyn the Great) in the early 13th century to control the access to Snowdonia via the Ffestiniog valley. Approximately at the same period, Llywelyn constructed Dolbadarn at Llanberis. According to an unverified tale, Llywelyn was born at or near Dolwyddelan Castle in 1173.
Lord Willoughby de Eresby, an eager Victorian restorer who acquired Dolwyddelan through an advantageous marriage, is mostly responsible for the ruins’ remarkable state of preservation.
The exterior of this castle is accessible throughout the year.
There is no designated parking available; do not park on the lot adjacent to the farmhouse.
