Llyn Ogwen is a tranquil lake of Arthurian legends nestled between the beautiful Carneddau Glyderau mountain ranges.
Unlike most lakes in Snowdonia, it is extremely shallow – just 3 meters deep at its deepest point. Its fresh waters are fed by cool mountain springs from the heights of Tryfan and Pen yr Ole Wen, the latter of which is the seventh highest mountain in Wales and it flows out into Afon Ogwen, finally entering the sea near Bangor. The lake is popular with anglers, because of the excellent trout found in it. The lake is sheltered from the worst of the wind that is common in the mountains, because of its place of nestled safety. However, there can still be strong winds here so make sure to bring appropriate clothing on chilly days.
According to the legend of King Arthur, Sir Bedivere cast Excalibur into the lake after King Arthur’s final battle where the Lady of the Lake caught it. It is also said to be Sir Bedivere’s final resting place.
