Tips for hiking in Wales
Plan your hike: Before you set off, make sure to choose a trail that is suitable for your fitness level and experience. You should also check the weather forecast and pack appropriate clothing and footwear.
Tell someone where you’re going: Always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. This is especially important if you’re hiking alone.
Be prepared for all weather conditions: The weather in Wales can change quickly, so it’s important to be prepared for all conditions. Pack layers of clothing, waterproofs, and a hat and gloves.
Pack plenty of food and drink: It’s important to stay hydrated and fuelled on a hike. Bring plenty of water and snacks and avoid sugary drinks.
Leave no trace: Please be respectful of the countryside and leave no trace of your visit. Take all your rubbish with you and dispose of it properly.
Hiking with children
Hiking with children can be a great way to get them outdoors and active. However, it’s important to choose a trail that is suitable for their age and abilities. You should also make sure to take breaks often and pack plenty of snacks and drinks.
Here are a few tips for hiking with children:
Choose a suitable trail: Make sure to choose a trail that is not too long or difficult for your children. It’s also a good idea to choose a trail that has plenty of interesting things to see and do, such as waterfalls, viewpoints and even playgrounds.
Take breaks often: Children have shorter attention spans than adults, so it’s important to take breaks often. This will give them a chance to rest, refuel and explore.
Make it fun: Hiking should be a fun experience for everyone involved. Make sure to play games like I-spy, tell stories and sing songs along the way.
Be prepared: Pack plenty of snacks, drinks, and sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to bring a first-aid kit and GPS or a map of the trail.
Wales is a wonderful place to go hiking, with stunning scenery and varied landscapes to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a challenging long-distance trail or a shorter day hike, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So get out there and explore!
