Autumn is here and winter is on its way. We know you may feel more like cosying up on the sofa at home with a glass of something and the TV remote than going out. But if you’re anything like us, once you make the effort to go out, you’re always pleased you did.
The past couple of winters gave us lockdowns which kept us in, denying the simple pleasures of a pint by a roaring fire. So, now we can, many of us appreciate going out even more. Going out is the new staying in!
What’s more, the hospitality sector needs us like never before. Visiting a cosy welsh pub is practically a public service these days!
Whether you want to sample the local ale, guzzle a gin and tonic or enjoy a hearty meal, Welsh pubs have a whole range of delights to offer you. Pull up a chair and catch by the fire.
So here’s a quick run-down of cosy pubs in West Wales where you’ll find a warm welcome. Our list is far from exhaustive, so do drop us a line if you have recommendations to add!
The Sloop Inn, Porthgain
A perennial favourite, The Sloop has been in situ since the 1700s and is consistently good. It’s open all day long (9.30am-11/12pm) and serves coffee for the weary walker as well as the usual pub fayre. Speaking of food, you’ll find a lunch and dinner menu, both with a good range of seasonal Welsh dishes, all cooked well. It’s advisable to book a table for the evenings as it’s a popular location which does get busy.
Combine your visit with a walk up onto the cliffs. We recommend heading South where you’ll find the fascinating ruins of the old brickworks. Head further on to Traeth Llyfn and the Blue Lagoon – a popular spot for watersports.
The Stackpole Inn
Promising a ‘warm welcome, The Stackpole Inn is situated in Stackpole Village, close to the Stackpole Estate, Barafundle Bay and the Bosherston Lily Ponds. You’ll find a cosy and traditional 17th-century inn with a Woodburner adding warmth in the winter months.
The Inn is renowned for its restaurant menu based around local produce and the Walkers Lunch is a daytime favourite which hits the spot after a hike – or even a stroll! Dogs are welcome in the bar. If you’re planning to eat, we’d advise booking ahead. Accommodation is also available.
The Castle, Little Haven
A popular spot for families in the summer, The Castle is also a great winter destination, helped by the open fire.
You can expect a warm welcome, good pub food with interesting specials, and a selection of ales. The Sunday Roasts are extremely popular. Dogs are welcome, but some areas are dog-free which means there’s something for everyone.
The Forest Arms, Brechfa, Carmarthenshire
A lovely traditional Welsh Inn with a roaring fire and comfortable seating, The Forest Arms is in a great location. In many ways it’s a perfect winter destination.
The pub is closed Mondays but open lunchtime and evening in the week and all day weekends. Food service times are shorter so check ahead. Booking is strongly
Penllwyndu, Llangoedmor
Penllwyndu is located in the Teifi Valley, between Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn. It’s a unique little Country Inn which is still a Free House.
Noted for the warmth of the welcome from both the landlords and locals, the food and ale is good. There’s also entertainment on offer with regular Open mic and theme nights on offer.
The Farmers Arms, Mathry
Good pub grub is the order of the day at The Farmers Arms. Popular with locals and tourists alike, you will receive a warm welcome. The bar area is cosy and bedecked by fairy lights for a festive feel.
You’ll find a delicious Sunday Lunch served in big portions, and don’t forget the monthly quiz in the winter – the second Sunday of the month at 8pm.
The Angel, Narberth
The Angel is a gem. It has recently been refurbished and brought back to life by a committed team. You’ll find delicious, seasonal food at surprisingly good prices served by attentive and friendly staff. The winter months see the addition of a Sunday Lunch menu.
As well as the all-important open fire, there’s a great selection of traditional drinks, plus local craft ales and Welsh Gins. Coffee, tea and homemade cake are served throughout the day and accommodation is also available.
The Golden Lion, Newport
Enjoy The Golden Lion’s cosy, warm bar and good food. As well as the bar area with its roaring fire, there’s a dedicated restaurant and 13 boutique bedrooms to boot.
Be aware The Golden Lion doesn’t open at lunchtimes, except on Sundays. Usual opening hours are 5-11pm.
The Royal Oak, Saundersfoot

Saundersfoot has seen a fair amount of investment in recent years and is a brilliant place to visit. Make sure to walk through the tunnels to Wiseman’s Bridge while you’re in the area!
The White Horse, Llandelio
An excellent selection of cask ales and craft lagers is available at The White Horse, including the locally based Evan-Evans. There’s good food and a cosy fire, as well as regular entertainment.
But, before you travel, check the opening hours. At present, the pub is only open Friday to Sunday, 12-11pm (9pm Sundays) and can sometimes be closed for private functions.
