Most of us enjoy time at home – or at the homes of friends and relatives over the festive period.
But as the old saying goes, you can have too much of a good thing. We all need to get out for a bit of fresh air and exercise eventually!
Twixtmas is a real thing these days – the period between Christmas and New Year. You’ll even find it in the dictionary!
So, whether you’re on holiday in wales or live here year-round, eventually you will be ready to leave the house and get out and about! Here are some ideas for great days (or half days) out in Wales this Twixtmas.
Experience a Light Trail
Across Wales you’ll find a range of light trails. These magical activities are increasingly popular with families of all ages, and it’s easy to see why.
Luminate takes place at The Garden of Wales in Cardiff and promises a ‘mesmerising mile-long walk’ with interactive elements. There’s also a Luminate at Margam Country Park in Port Talbot
The Cardigan Castle FFABL: Light & Lantern Trail incorporates wintry stories and Welsh Mythology from Wales’s finest book of legends, the Mabinogion.
Visit a Castle
Castles are not just for holidays. This might just be the perfect time of year to visit a castle – although be sure to check opening times on the relevant website as some sites are closed.
In North Wales, check out our blog post The best Castles to visit in North Wales this autumn and winter for ideas.
In West Wales, the lovely gem Carew Castle is open 11am-3pm, and you’ll even find the tearoom open.
Pembroke Castle is also open at this time of year and provides plenty of entertainment and great views.
Dryslwyn Castle is always open and the perfect place to explore the remains and stretch those legs!
Get out for a Walk
Why not keep it simple – and free – and get out for a good old walk?
Wales is absolutely bursting with wonderful places to walk. From beautiful beaches where you can blow the cobwebs away to the many hills and valleys, rivers and reservoirs which the country is blessed with. You can even just head to your nearest town or city and enjoy the festive lights!
Walking is also brilliant for your mental and physical health, take a look at our blog Five great reasons to get out for an Autumn Stroll in Wales for the full lowdown!
And when you’ve stretched those legs, perhaps you might even be tempted to try one of the hostelries in our guide, Winter Warmers: The Best Pubs in West Wales to enjoy a Cosy Evening in 2022.
Get your Ice Skates On!
If you’re feeling really brave, try out one of the seasonal outdoor ice rinks which are popping up across Wales this winter. With skate aids and skates provided, this is brilliant, safe fun for all the family. Booking recommended via the individual websites.
Swansea Waterfront Winterland is at the Museum Park and as well as the covered ice rink and an ice walk, you’ll find a family funfair and plenty of food stalls.
Cardiff Winter Wonderland offers a similar setup, with the Ice Rink and Ice Walk situated at Cardiff Castle this year. There’s also a funfair with giant wheel, sur la piste ski lodge, ice bar and more at City Hall Lawn.
And last but not least, Barry Island Winter Wonderland is situated in the Pleasure Park. There’s also food and drink available, as well as access to all the popular rides with reduced token prices promised!
No excuses!
So there you have it, there’s plenty on offer this winter to get you out and about in Wales! Grab your coat, shoes and woolly hat and enjoy yourself!
