Wales is known for its beautiful countryside, rolling hills, dramatic mountains, and peaceful coastline. One of the best ways to take it all in is by car. Whether you’re planning a relaxing weekend away or just fancy a day out, these scenic drives in Wales offer stunning views and unforgettable moments.

Llanberis Pass – Snowdonia National Park

This route takes you through the heart of Snowdonia. Starting in the village of Llanberis, the road winds between some of Wales’ highest peaks, including Snowdon itself. The views are dramatic, with rocky cliffs, lakes, and steep valleys. Stop off for a walk or enjoy a coffee in a local café.

Top tip: Try to go early in the day or during the week to avoid crowds, especially in summer.

The Black Mountain Pass – Brecon Beacons

Also known as the A4069, this winding road through the Brecon Beacons is a favourite among locals and visitors. It offers panoramic views of green valleys and wild open spaces. It’s a popular drive for photographers and motorbike riders too.

Fun fact: This road was featured on the TV show Top Gear.

Elan Valley – Mid Wales

If you enjoy quiet roads and peaceful landscapes, the Elan Valley is perfect. The drive takes you past beautiful reservoirs, stone bridges, and forested hills. It’s especially lovely in autumn when the leaves turn golden.

Why go: There are picnic spots and walking trails along the way, making it a great place to relax and enjoy nature.

Anglesey Coastal Drive – North Wales

This route circles much of the island of Anglesey, offering stunning sea views, quiet beaches, and charming villages. Highlights include Beaumaris Castle, South Stack Lighthouse, and the Menai Suspension Bridge.

Don’t miss: A stop at the village with the famously long name:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

Bwlch y Groes – The highest road in Wales

Known as the “Pass of the Cross,” this mountain road is one of the highest public roads in Wales. Found in the north, it links the town of Dinas Mawddwy with Bala. The drive is steep and narrow in parts, but the views from the top are breathtaking.

Be careful: It’s not for the faint-hearted, especially in bad weather, but well worth it on a clear day.
