  >  Beaches   >  How to stay safe at the beach – Tips for Visitors and What Councils Can Do

Having visited Llandudno’s beautiful beaches many times, I’ve recently been thinking about how easily things can go wrong if you’re not careful with the tides. There have been incidents where people found themselves literally up to their necks in water, caught out by how quickly the tide can come in. It’s made me realise how important it is to stay safe and how councils and local organisations can play their part in preventing accidents.

If you’re planning a trip to Llandudno or anywhere along the coast, here are a few things I always keep in mind to stay safe:

But despite every precaution, if you do find yourself cut off or caught by the incoming tide, keeping calm is key. Try to move to higher ground and call the emergency services if you can. Making yourself visible and staying where rescuers can spot you is vital.

From what I’ve seen reported, I think councils could do even more to help keep people safe at places like Llandudno:

  1. Installing clearer, more eye-catching signs about the dangers and tide times, possibly in several languages.

2. Running regular safety campaigns, especially in summer when the beaches are busiest.

3. Making sure emergency equipment like life rings are easy to find and well maintained.

4. Increasing beach patrols during peak times could provide swift help if someone gets into trouble.

Days by the sea should be fun and relaxing. But the sea is powerful and unpredictable. Taking a few simple steps can make a huge difference—not just for your own safety but for everyone enjoying the coast.

If you’re visiting Llandudno or similar spots, please have a safe and happy time. And remember, respect the sea and its changing tides; it’s the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
