If you have yet to decide where to book a holiday in 2023, you’ve come to the right place.
Wales has so much going for it! Whether you are a young family, a retired couple, a lone traveller – or something else, Wales has lots to offer you. And there are no passports needed, no hanging around in airports, and no delays to derail your fun!
Read on to discover why Wales is the perfect place for a holiday at any time of the year and the top reasons Wales should be on your must-do list for 2023.
1. Beautiful Beaches and Dramatic Coastline
Wales is – quite literally – surrounded by coastline. Well, ok, we’ll admit not quite surrounded. But for a little country, we certainly pack a punch as far as beaches and coastline are concerned.
In fact, the coastline of Wales is approximately 1,680 miles long! So, wherever you choose for your holiday, it’s likely there will be beaches and coastline within easy reach. And the fantastic thing is, they’re unspoilt and never hideously busy or overcrowded. Many Welsh beaches hold Blue Flags –
In North Wales, popular beaches include Barmouth, Llandudno and Harlech. In West Wales you are spoilt for choice, try Broadhaven, Barafundle, Tenby or Cefn Sidan. Angelsey is just packed with beaches like Llanddona, Red Wharf Bay and Rhosneigr.
And it’s not all about a day on the beach. If that’s not your thing, take a walk along the coastline. The Wales Coastal Path is absolutely stunning, and you don’t have to walk the whole thing. But if you do fancy a challenge, try the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and immerse yourself in the breathtakingly beautiful coastline.
2. Cracking Castles
You can’t move in Wales for castles!
OK, so maybe that’s not quite true but there are plenty to choose from! There’s a reason why Wales is sometimes called the ‘castle capital of the world’! Originally, there were around 600 castles, in Wales, and today over 100 remain standing – either as ruins or as restored buildings. Many are open to the public and run all kinds of activities, particularly in the summer season.
Do check out our dedicated Castle posts to learn more: North Wales Castles, West Wales Castles.
3. Fantastic Family Attractions
Wales has plenty of attractions for all the family. Whether the sun is shining or it’s pouring with rain, we’ve got you covered.
If animals are your thing, there are Zoos and Aquariums across Wales, and even a safari park! One of our favourites is Folly Farm which offers much more than a Zoo and is packed with entertainment for all ages.
Countless parks and gardens provide good old-fashioned outdoor entertainment, along with galleries, shops and theatres spread across Wales.
Take a boat trip and view bird and sea life in its natural habitat. Or visit one of the small islands just off the coast of the mainland.
For the particularly adventurous, check out one of the high rope and tree top courses, or try ziplining, climbing, kayaking or coasteering!
And, never fear, we’ve even put together a guide especially for those rainy days.
Wherever in Wales you choose, you will find plenty to keep you busy!
4. History and Heritage
There are museums and historic houses aplenty in Wales, offering you the perfect chance to learn about the past and how it has shaped the present and future.
Why not visit The Royal Mint Visitor Centre where you can discover over a thousand years of coin-related history.
If modern day is more your thing, visit The Senedd – home of the devolved Welsh Parliament in Cardiff.
5. Remarkable Countryside and Marvellous Mountains
Mount Snowdon is famous worldwide and is probably what comes to mind when we say ‘Welsh Mountains’, and everyone should visit Snowdon and Snowdonia at least once. As far as Snowdon itself goes, choose from six different paths to the summit, and even take the train thanks to the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
But there’s so much more to Welsh Mountains than Snowdon!
The Black Mountains and the Black Mountain Range (not one and the same thing, confusingly!) offer remote and exhilarating 800m climbs.
The Brecon Beacons National Park has plenty of paths and trails and offers stunning scenery and wildlife. And you’ll find the Brecon Beacons much quieter than Snowdonia.
And, not to be forgotten, situated between Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian Mountains in Ceredigion are home to the sources of the rivers Wye and the Severn and the peaceful Elan Valley reservoirs. You’ll find open moorland, peaks and valleys.
There’s something for everyone – and much more!
We hope we’ve shown some of what Wales has to offer for your 2023 UK holiday.
